Principal Update

Welcome back from spring break! We were thrilled to see all our students re-energized and ready to learn. As we move forward into our final two months of school, we are excited to see our students shine and celebrate their hard work.  Please save the date for Student Led Conferences on May 2.  This is a great opportunity for your student’s to share their progress and celebrate their accomplishments from the year.

We wish our 3rd grade Destination Imagination (DI) students the best during their “Worlds Beyond” scientific challenge at the DI State Tournament taking place tomorrow! They will be competing against 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders from other schools across Colorado. Let’s cheer them on as they showcase their creativity and teamwork!

Have a great weekend,

Kimberly Ulery, Principal

Jose Fernando Hernandez, Assistant Principal

Shoutouts

Shout-out to our incredible 5th grade students and teachers! After a strong first week of CMAS, we were so proud to see our students giving their best effort and staying focused through the first two units of literacy. Their determination and perseverance reflect the IB Learner Profile, especially being thinkers and principled. Thank you, 5th grade team, for setting your students up for success and supporting them every step of the way! Keep up the great work!

CMAS will continue next week, and we want to make sure our students are set up for success. Here’s how you can help at home:

  • Prioritize attendance: Please make sure your child is at school on time each day. Every session is important, and being here on time helps students feel confident and prepared.

  • Help them get plenty of rest: A good night’s sleep makes a big difference in helping students stay focused.

  • Offer encouragement: A few kind words of motivation can go a long way. Remind them how proud you are and that their best effort is what matters most.

BESS
Behavior and Emotional Screening System (BESS): The BESS is a screening tool published by Pearson for schools to determine student’s behavioral and emotional well being.  This tool is short in duration and is written in such a way that the student report form can be used by students ages 8 through 18 (3rd through 12th grade).  The tool yields a risk score in three domain areas of:

  1. Internalizing
  2. Self Regulation
  3. Personal Adjustment

These three areas are combined into what is referred to as a Behavioral and Emotional Risk Index.  In both the sub domains and the Behavioral and Emotional Risk Index, the tool uses the responses to the questions asked of the students to yield a risk score of Normal Risk, Elevated Risk, or Extremely Elevated Risk.

You are invited and encouraged to complete a short form to provide valuable  input on your student’s mental health and social emotional well being.  A form can be completed in less than 5 minutes! Access the BESS HERE.4th Grade Students Take Action
A few 4th grade students want to take action to help others in need. Do you have any gently used adult and children clothing to donate to this cause?  Please see their presentation HERE to see if you can help support their cause.

April IB Learner Profile
The Learner Profile for the month of April is “Knowledgeable”.  Those who are knowledgeable explore concepts and ideas that have local and global significance.  In doing so, they acquire in depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.

Activities for Parents

  • Encourage your child to read books at home that correspond to the topics being covered in school.
  • If English isn’t your primary language, then encourage books in their mother tongue. This will help make them more meaningful and create connections to what is being taught in their classroom in English.
  • Ask your child about what they are learning in school and engage them in conversations about it.
-”Why do you think that was an important thing to know?”
-”Can you think of anything happening in the world today that might be similar to that aspect of history?”
  • Encourage your child to become more familiar with the acts of kindness throughout the world and how they can replicate those acts of kindness in their own lives and the lives of others.
